Assignment: Favorite Functions
What is your favorite function?
Mine is good ol' f(x) = x squared. He is my favorite for many reasons. First he is always in a good mood and is never negative. Secondly, he is even-tempered -- f(-x) always equals f(x). I also like him because no matter what x-value I choose, f(x)'s rate of change is always constant and ends up being twice the x value. Finally, I think he is cool because whether his x-values go toward positive or negative infinity, his graph climbs toward the sky.
Name your favorite function and explain why you chose him/her.

Awesome Idea Mr. Mayo! This will really help next year's students. Good luck to the 2006 Calc class. Work hard all year because it is worth it in the end.

My Favorite function is f(x)= x^3. The reason this is my favorite is it is not set on either constantly positive or negative, and has the ability to be either. He is not confined to only the upper quadrants of the graph, and can either reach for the stars, or plumet to a spectacular crash.
my favorite graph is x^2 because....its the easiest to remember, and i always think of it right away, whenever i think of a graph
My favorite function would have to be f(x)=sin(x). He's a good friend and sometimes partner in crime. We are close because he has a nice wavy look to him that just flows. Not to mention he is very helpful at certain times.
My favorite function is definatley y=cos(x). I love how the waves continue in harmony for ever and how you can invision the graph becoing sphere-like, for the unit circle.
Ummm a "function"???? Isn't that a large or important social gathering. In which case I'm always up for a party. However, I find funerals to be a rather grim social "function". Of course you could mean "function" as a responsibility often associated with employment. My "function" as a disciplinary is often depressing.... however you desire our favorite "function" in which case it may well be giving test. I find a certain sadistic entertainment in that particular job "function". As far as wavy lines and graph coordinates.... I don't think I get that???? But what do I know .... one of my "functions" is to facilitate the hacking of cats ... so you know I'm clueless. Blogging .... I think I could like this ... nice Mayo!
My favorite function is f(x)=the cube root of x (I couldn't figure out how to type that). He is my favorite because he can be both positive and negative, but he doesn't go straight into the ground or shoot off into the sky really fast, he just slowly meanders up and down as he pleases.
Hmmm, favorite function, aye? I'd have to say mine would be f(x)=|f(x)|, I always found it nifty that no matter what you put in, you would always get out a positive number. I don't know why, though.
Hello. My favorite function has to be f(x)=cos(sin(x)). It always remains positive and goes forever, resembling my everlasting passion for calculus. Also, Goeps definitely spelled "definatley" wrong. Peace Easy
my fav function is x 2 because it is the easiest to remember for me and mr. mayos explination sealed the deal for my fav function. nicely done mr mayo. purple cars drive the rainbow road to the sky to take a dip into the pool of happiness.
okay...well...let's see since people like me are simple minded and like things to be easy...i think the good old y=x is my favorite function...hey we all know it's great because it's short and sweet...
favorite function is f(x)=lnx
He starts real fast, then he slows down until he's almost standing still. But even though he's moving slow, he keeps going.
My favorite function would have to be f(x)= x^4. At the beginning we are all slow to start just like mr. function x^4. Once we get the hang of what we're doing though we are off to accomplish great things at an incredible rate!
My favorite function is f(x)=e^x. She is my favorvite because she starts off really slow but once she has a little time to get going she shoots off really fast.
personally my favorite function is f(x)=log(x). He takes his time moving forward and doesnt rush into things(which i admire)! Also he never lets himself go beyond zero, coming close but never does!
My favorite function is f(x)=x^2 because it is simple and easy to remember. It also is never negative an always reaching for the stars!
I would say my favorite function would have to be f(x)=1/x. It is a strange one or maybe odd would be the better term(haha). It is awesome how it just stops at zero then just keeps on truckin' along the coordinate plane.
i guess my favorite function is y= absolute value of x(didnt know how to do the absolute value bars). i think i like it just bc its a straight V..there are none of these twists or curves..its just straight forward and clean cut..its simple..and thats how i like things to be.
I'd have to say that my favorite function would have to be f(x)=x (or y=x). Functions can't get much simpler than this one, and if math is not your forte (like me), simplicity is bliss! I consider it THE parent function, THE origin, and THE most basic representation of a function.
